*Woodworking for the Blind Seventh Annual Summer Workshop Now Two Separate Sessions Fundamental and Advance All Members Invited
*Woodworking Fundamentals Session Saturday, August 13, 2018 thru August 18, 2018 Welcoming Dinner Saturday evening August 13
This session will focus on introducing participants to basic woodworking skills: measuring, cutting, routing, drilling, plaining, joining, sanding and, if time and interest permits, wood turning. We will spend one day working on a production project designed to produce a quantity of product. Last year, for example, we produced redwood trucks. Participants will also have an opportunity to work on their own projects, so they should come with ideas of things they'd like to create.
We will also spend time discussing various strategies and techniques for designing and building wood projects. Example topics include: gluing techniques, how to choose the right fasteners for specific projects, how to select the best wood for specific projects, designs for joints and the pros and cons of each. The topics discussed and the techniques we cover will depend on the interests of the participants.
Advanced Woodworking Session* Monday, August 20, 2018 thru Saturday August 25, 2018 Welcoming Dinner Monday evening August 20
This session will focus on more advanced woodworking topics: how to set equipment for specific projects, advanced joinery techniques, how to sand and finish projects, how to make specialized cuts and, if time and interest permit, advanced wood turning techniques. If the participants are interested, we may spend time working on a production project design to produce a quantity of a given product.
We will also discuss techniques and tricks for more time-consuming projects. For example: what kind of finishes to use for various projects, how to effectively use veneers in projects, how to select the right fasteners for projects and how to effectively glue all of these things together, just to name a few. Participants will also have an opportunity to work on their own projects, so they should come with ideas of things they'd like to work on. Topics discussed and practiced will be highly dependent on the interests and skills of the participants.
Each Session is 4 days of hands on instruction, technique sharing, discussions, interactive meetings with meals and refreshments Spouses and Companions are Welcome!
